1 Month DJ'ing in Rio De Janeiro

A month in Brasil will change your whole perspective on DJ'ing, rhythm, and music. Brasilians are born into music. It isn't a choice, it's hereditary. If you were to take a look at a Brasilian's DNA, the X and Y chromosones would be samba dancing. In Rio, a city where every girl can dance- and has an ass- like Shakira, music is seen as a primary importance to life and will always thrive in the hearts of the Carioca people:

One of the coolest and most underground bars in Copacabana, The Clandestino Bar hosts one of the most gritty and worldly parties in Rio De Janeiro: 'Black Friday' is run by DJ/promoter Joca Sans and resident DJ, DJ Tamenpi. Joca brings in International DJ's weekly to come and play the music that they choose uninfluenced by the crowd type. During my time in Rio, DJ's from Denmark, Argentina, NYC, Chile, and London where all hosted at Joca's 'Black Friday' Party...Its the type of club where you can spark up a spliff right in the middle of your DJ set, and puff puff pass to your audience.

We On a Boat!

That's right, We On A Boat! Jonesy flew into Rio a week after me. We had a gig the night he arrived but I had the worst stomach ache ever and we had to cancel last minute. This party boat was f* crazy though! A well-known hostel, Stone of a Beach organizes this Party Boat that sails around the Maria Gloria harbor in Rio while Austrailian, European, and American travelers get wasted, eat bbq, and party to the boat DJ's. SO CRAZY!

The boat holds about 100 people and the Brasilian crew brought in turntables for Jonesy and myself...the set-up is kinda hood-rich, but life is GOOD DJing on this boat.At some points the boat would hit a pacth of waves and the entire boat would rock, the needles would fly off the turntables, and drunk Austrailians would topple ontop of our DJ set-up

This club is another alternative uber-underground gem located in the more discrete area of Botofogo, Rio. The club hosts some of the most savvy and experimental weekly parties in Rio. The club is covered in awesome graffetti done by some of Rio's most famous artists. Our close homie Nelson of Digital Dubs Sound System hosts the event and plays some of the most rootsy Dub you'll ever hear. Check out their new album 'Funk Milk Riddim'

4. FLO @ Baronneti
Ipanema, Rio De Janeiro, BR

Baronneti is one of Rio's most baller night clubs. Located in the heart of Ipanema, this club attracts 'playboys' and very sexy and wealthy young Carioca girls. With one the most high end crowds in Rio, the audience at Baronetti all dress to the T. To generalize, more or less this young/sexy crowd was very MTV savvy and desired to hear the big pop hits. I was the featured DJ for the night, and the club set me up on their stage to showcase a 1 hour DJ set @ 3:30am.

Joca invited me to play an encore at his Black Friday party to continue an NYC theme. DJ G Brown (spins at Upstairs, Butter, Tenjune) from NYC was featured to play at Clandestino. Interestingly enough not only do me and G Brown know many of the same DJ's and spin at similar NYC venues, it turns out the he literally lives on the same block asme in Harlem! Small Small world. G Brown ripped a classic NYC socialite party set and people loved it. I went on after him around 3:30am and dropped a hip-hop backpackers DJ set.
